WE CANNOT IGNORE HEALTH CARE REFORM

The Signal's editorial on health care reform ("The people have spoken: Pay attention," Jan. 24) lists some of the low-hanging fruit which might find favor in Congress on both sides of the aisle.

Sadly, nowhere do you call for the two most important elements of reform which are so desperately needed: Health care insurance coverage for the upwards of 40 million citizens who do not and/or cannot get it now, and serious efforts to contain the spiraling costs of both health care services and the insurance that pays for them.

These two national problems will ruin our country if not properly addressed - and soon.

I have listened with increasing alarm to the partisan attacks from the selfish right against comprehensive health care reform, which have now so poisoned the atmosphere in both Washington, D.C., and across the nation that it looks increasingly like all that can be enacted are the good but entirely insufficient measures you call for in your editorial.

How is it that we, as Americans, can be so generous in sending aid to earthquake-riven Haiti (something I applaud and have joined in personally) while completely ignoring the plight of so many millions of our fellow citizens who lack health care insurance?

Are the Haitian people more deserving of our compassion than our own neighbors right here in the Santa Clarita Valley?

I suggest that Congress stop giving itself (generous) health care insurance benefits until every American receives them. How long do you think our elected representatives would wait before acting then?
